After three laser treatments at over $200 a pop it had hardly faded. That was especially frustrating because the tat is black, which is supposedly the easiest color to remove. It looks like I have the misfortune of having a low-quality tattoo in high-quality ink. I was extremely frustrated, and decided desperate measures were called for. I resolved to use salabrasion on myself, but only on a small portion of the tattoo, as a test. I knew I’d certainly scar, but didn’t care.

I hopped in the shower with a pouch of sea salt, turned on the water, poured some salt onto a wet cloth, and began rubbing my arm very hard. Within a few minutes I was bleeding, and within twenty the epidermis was gone and I had dug well into the dermis. The pain was excruciating, but only at first; it seems the salt began acting as an anaesthetic after a while. (Or it could have just been my endorphins kicking in.) I was spurred on by the fact that I could actually see the ink becoming patchier the more I rubbed. Eventually I had a deep red valley in my arm that bled surprisingly little–apparently salt staunches blood flow. It was terrible-looking, but didn’t hurt much. (Keep in mind that I’ve been whipped for fun, so my opinion of what’s painful might be taken with–well, a grain of salt.) I had spent almost two hours toiling and decided it was time to be done, though there was still some ink left. I rinsed off the salt with cold water, dried myself, put antibiotic ointment on the wound, bandaged it, and went to sleep.

A scab soon formed which had a hard time staying attached to my arm because the wound was so deep and there was nothing much for it to cling to. A lot of ink was contained in the scab–when it fell off, the ink that was left underneath was hardly visible. A second scab formed and fell off, with more ink in it. It’s now been a couple of weeks since the salabrasion and the wound is well on its way to healing, with hardly any ink visible. I pour hydrogen peroxide on it every day after I shower, followed by vitamin E cream and Neosporin. The tiny bit of ink that’s left seems to be very close to the surface, and I think it’ll completely disappear by the time I’ve fully healed.

I can now say from firsthand experience that salabrasion does work. It’s nasty, ugly, bloody, barbaric, painful, carries the risk of infection, and will certainly leave heavy scars, but that it gets rid of ink is beyond dispute. I haven’t decided yet if I’ll use it on the rest of my tattoo. That’d be a huge scar, and I’m not sure I want it.

The flowings is reviews for “Tattoo Johnny: 3,000 Tattoo Designs”.

First off, i bought this because I am a tattoo artist and I have used Tattoo Johnny’s site for references at times as well as clients bringing me in images from that site. I wanted to add this book to my collection, seeing as how some of the designs on there are $10 for just an individual design. This book was under $10 when i bought it – so economically 3,000 designs for $10 instead of 1 design for $10 – just seems logical right.

well, i was hoping there would be some Ambigrams in here – but there aren’t. Also hoping to see some Graffiti and Tribal – but there is no section dedicated to either genre. There are some tribal designs in the book, but not a tribal section. The categories as follows:

Angels & Demons/Animals/Armband, Lower Back, & Belly Designs/Japanese & Asian/Butterflies & Insects/Suns & Moons/Dragons/Fairies/Flowers/Sea Life/Patriotic & Military/Pinups/Religious & Spiritual/Skulls & Horror/Traditional/Zodiac.

The book is 351 pages long and 90% of the pics are full color.

I was hoping there would be a lil sampling of each genre in here – like ambigrams, lettering, biomech, graffiti, etc but there really isn’t. There is a sampling of the categories i referenced above that the book has but these pics are pretty old school – i know some people who would get some of these, but i don’t see a whole lot of ppl browsing thru this book like my others…

If i knew it was going to be like this, i would of bought a better book. I’m not totally disappointed with it, cuz I am going to use it… but there are better books out there. If Tattoo Johnny comes out with a sequel – i would hope it will have better art in it, plus the other stuff i mentioned – graffiti, biomech, etc..

so far the best book i have come across the is the tattoo encyclopedia – black cover, sells for about $50. best one – doesn’t include graffiti either – but there’s loads of stuff in it.

Which tattoo designs look the best in black and white ink?
Also, are there any designs that really don’t look nice without color?

B&W doesn’t fade as badly as the other colours too, and it’s likely to have fewer ‘heavy metals’ too – which maybe part of your reasoning anyway?

Depending upon the overall size of the tattoo you’re planning, i’d suggest avoiding lots of thin lines, and the other extreme – few, big in-filled areas. The thin lines wont be so clear etc, and the larger areas will make you look like more like Lucky Diamond Rich (2nd source).

Where are you having it done? (Eg. bony or other sensitive areas?) This may affect your choice since more ink, equals more pain in there!

Remember it will usually be visible through a thin cotton shirt or whatever, which also may affect your choice?

Tribal tattoos?
im doing a research project on the history of tattoos. i need to know what they used for ink back in the tribal tattoos (like the samoan, maori ect.) can anyone help me?

okay, roughly, back then tribes used to practically cut the designs into the skin…obviously there was tones of blood pouring out so they had to rub it with ashes or leaves afterwards, and maybe put on some kind of a bandage on it…
later, some tribes started making different kinds of ink, so they just rubbed that on the skin, after cutting it…
and then in Japan they used to put the ink they made into something that worked like a needle and inject it into their skin, they still do that at some tat shops

Where can I find the best butterfly tattoos?
I was looking to have someone design my tattoo but I just think its going to be extra money and I might not even like the tattoo they draw. So im looking for a butterfly tattoo that I can put on my right shoulder blade. Im also looking for either chinese or arabic letters that can spell out Mimi. Thats what my grandfather use to call me. I am not sure yet what kind of letters I want but im not looking for “dirty” letters like cursive or anything english. I like soft letters that would look nice on a females body. I just think that american letters on a girl looks trashy (thats just my opinion). Please help!

You should look around the internet and modify one yourself. You should also be able to bring up a coupls of pictures you like to the tattoo place and have them do little changes themselves. I don’t know if it will cost more or not, that seems like more of a decision the tattoo place makes themselves.

As far as the letters go you should be able to find a couple of translator websites that have those languages and translate something from English to Arabic (or whatever you want.) Since it is a translating website you can be pretty sure it doesn’t say something random.

Generations X and Y have more relaxed attitudes toward body art, but the older generations are making the hiring decisions.

By Michelle Dynes

CHEYENNE — Tattoos and piercings may hurt the job prospects for potential employees with body art.

A job seeker’s qualifications and skills are what secure a new position, but experience could be overshadowed by visible signs of self-expression. Employers also worry that new hires may not always conceal the ink or remove the body jewelry.

“I’ve heard job seekers who have a lot of tattoos make the comments that they’re unemployable because of the decisions they made when they were younger,” said Andrea Hixon, manager of the Cheyenne Workforce Center.

Nearly 40 percent of adults ages 18 to 40 have a tattoo, while nearly 30 percent of the age group has a non-earlobe piercing, according to the Pew Research Center’s “Generation Next” survey. Hixon said some employers have relaxed workplace policies for young professionals, while others remain firm about who represents a business and who deals with customers face-to-face.

She added that her advice is simple: Research a company’s culture before the interview. Cover visible art, even if it means wearing long-sleeved shirts in the summer. And remove lip rings and tongue piercings when meeting with potential employers.

A tough job market means that competition is high. Inked and pierced job seekers could be sidelined, even when they hold a college degree or a strong resume. Other employees are asked to maintain a professional appearance while on the job, said Yvonne Arellano-Jacoby, a workforce specialist at the center.

“It’s either you take (a piercing) out or you don’t have a job,” she added.

It’s also a policy that isn’t limited by industry, affecting jobs in the information technology sector as well as construction. Tattooed job applicants do have difficulties finding employment, said Josh Hunter, an artist with Bad Ass Tattoo in Cheyenne. And when they do find work, it’s often more of a temporary position than a career-oriented job.

“I probably would have thought twice about (chest, neck and face tattoos) if I wasn’t a tattoo artist,” he added.

Bud Pierson, an artist at Skibo’s Tattoo, said he won’t do tattoos that could interfere with future employment. He also discourages customers from finding someone else to complete artwork that can’t be covered. Roughly 10 percent of his clients are interested in a hand, neck or face tattoo, and there are always a few individuals who won’t be discouraged.

Pierson said it has nothing to do with age or a clash of generational values. The 60-year-old tattoo artist regrets his decision to ink both his hands in 1971. He also decided not to hire a talented artist because of face tattoos that could have made customers uncomfortable.

“It can be a deterrent — even in the tattoo industry,” he added. “As an employer, you have the right to tell someone how they will or will not appear. If (a tattoo) is privately placed, it’s not going to be a problem. If it’s on the hands, neck or face, you’re limiting yourself.”

Who’s tattooed, and who’s pierced?

36 — Percentage of 18- to 25-year-olds who have or have had a tattoo

40 — Percentage of 26- to 40-year-olds who have or have had a tattoo

10 — Percentage of 41- to 64-year-olds who have or have had a tattoo

30 — Percentage of 18- to 25-year-olds who have a non-earlobe piercing

22 — Percentage of 26- to 40-year-olds who have a non-earlobe piercing

6 — Percentage of 41- to 64-year-olds who have a non-earlobe piercing

By ARTEMIS COUGHLAN

BRISTOL TOWNSHIP — The Falls Township convict charged with tattooing a teen for sex would be more than 1,000 years old by the time he got out of prison after being slammed today with another 195 counts of rape and related charges.

Bucks County District Attorney David Heckler said he got to 1,000 years then stopped calculating the maximum sentence accused rapist Walter Meyerle faces upon conviction.

“That is our goal,” Heckler said about the sentence he wants to get for Meyerle.

Meyerle, 34, is charged with 230 counts of sexual assault on 14 juveniles and two adults, Heckler said at the Bristol Township Municipal Building, about a half-hour after Meyerle’s perp walk into district court, where Judge Frank W. Peranteau set an additional $5 million bail.

The accused was shackled and wore a yellow jumpsuit as he walked into court to hear the charges against him. His wife was in the courtroom, too.

In March, Peranteau slapped a $1 million bail on Meyerle after he was charged with 35 counts of sexual deviancy in the case of a 14-year-old girl who said she’d have sex with him in exchange for a tattoo below her pantyline.

Jessica gahring’s had a passion for tattooing for years, and now Troy resident Jessica Gahring will have a chance to showcase that passion on a national stage.

Gahring will appear on the new TLC reality show “NY Ink,” a spinoff of its popular Miami and Los Angeles-based series, which premieres tonight at 10 p.m. on channel 40.

The 2004 graduate of Russell Sage College said she has worked in a few tattoo parlors and even been featured in some tattoo magazines, but didn’t expect to land a spot on a reality show. After a former Sage classmate who lives in New York City emailed her about the opportunity, Gahring applied on a whim, and was surprised to hear back from shop owner Ami James, who asked her to come down for an interview.

The pair hit it off — James loved her portfolio and her personality, Gahring said — and after getting the green light from the bigwigs at TLC, Gahring had secured her spot on the new series. The whole process took only a few months, and Gahring and the rest of the “NY Ink” crew began filming in late March. The experience has been “surreal” so far, Gahring said, and the cast of “strong personalities” will ensure that the show has no shortage of excitement.

“It has its moments where it’s tough and it’s emotional because you’ve got all these people who are so passionate about what they do who also have been doing it for a long time and who also are opinionated,” she said. “And when you take a whole room full of lions and stick them into one den, you’re going to get insanity.”

Despite the insanity, Gahring, who now splits her time between Troy and New York, said she feels at home amid the craziness, and her family and friends aren’t surprised about her sudden appearance in the spotlight. Her daughter, a first grader, “can’t go anywhere without … trying to tell people that mommy’s got a TV show,” Gahring said with a laugh.

Being an example to her daughter is also a reason to relish her TV experience, Gahring said, proving that it’s possible to successfully follow your dreams.

“I’m a go-getter, I reach out there, and I don’t really fear failure, and when you (have) confidence and you do what you love, that’s the most important thing. If you’re doing what you love, you can’t fail,” she said.

As for what viewers can expect from Gahring and other cast members this season, she admitted there would be “no shortness of tears or fighting,” but also said that people would “be able to see my passion … and everybody else’s.”

“They’ve chosen the perfect combination of people to make magic happen,” she added.
