Tribal tattoos?
im doing a research project on the history of tattoos. i need to know what they used for ink back in the tribal tattoos (like the samoan, maori ect.) can anyone help me?

okay, roughly, back then tribes used to practically cut the designs into the skin…obviously there was tones of blood pouring out so they had to rub it with ashes or leaves afterwards, and maybe put on some kind of a bandage on it…
later, some tribes started making different kinds of ink, so they just rubbed that on the skin, after cutting it…
and then in Japan they used to put the ink they made into something that worked like a needle and inject it into their skin, they still do that at some tat shops

if you are a female, you should definitely consider using Angel tattoos as these suit females well. Not sure, if the same can be said about men!

Inherently, Angel tattoos provide the body a feminine touch. When in full flow, these tattoos look like the Cherubs sitting on cloud Angels are heavenly figures, normally considered be to good souls. Typically, you could Angel tattoos done on the upper arm or chests, if you are a guy. For females, shoulder or the abdomen are the preferred places to have the Angel Tattoos done.

The presence of such tattoos in a person’s body, whether man or woman, means a lot. In most cases, people etch or ink these tattoos to show the presence of a very close friend. You would also find people using these tattoos to depict their near and dear ones who are deceased. Angels, being a symbol of protection, thus find their way to almost every person’s body.

One of the best aspects of an Angel Tattoo is that they can be drawn as big as in size, and yet not create an intimidating feel of the people who wear these tattoos. See the wings of some angel tattoos and you will clearly understand what is being said here! In some cases, the entire back is inked with the wings of the tattoo giving it a rather divine feel.

How much does a tattoo cost in Beijing？

I’m heading to Beijing this summer I want to get a tattoo about 3in x 2in. How much would a reputable tattoo parlor cost (anywhere that’s not underground) and where would you suggest I go for one?

I got a tattoo in China of a similar size in a decent place and it cost about 1000rmb – this is equivalent to about 100pounds sterling.

To find a good place in Beijing I suggest you join a site called ‘beijing stuff’ and then post a question on their forum. This site is full of expats living there and they’ll be able to give you sensible advice in English.

Hope this helps!

Chinese and tattoo

1: Traditionally, tattooing depends very much on which culture you grow up in. “Western” cultures and most of China traditionally see tattoos as a sign of something bad about the tattooed. In Polynesia, traditional tattoos carry a lot of very positive information about who you are and where you come from. Cultural background is the key here.

2: Because tattoos are traditionally seen as a sign of something bad (criminal history, barbarian, etc) in most of China, Chinese people, like most of the more conservative/traditionally minded “Westerners” have a hard time accepting somebody tattooed as not necessarily being a bad person.

3: All cultures are in a constant state of change. Over my lifetime, short as it is, I have seen tattooing on my home islands go from a dual traditional Maori (and to a lesser extent wider Polynesia) unusual but positive/traditional European rebellious, criminal, not good situation through a revival of Maori (and to a lesser extent wider Polynesian) culture, including traditional taMoko to a more general acceptance of tattooing in all its traditional and modern forms. I see here in China, especially amongst my students, a growing acceptance of modern “Western” style tattooing as being something ‘cool’ and desirable among the younger generation.

The abundance of “scare” “quotes” and general vagueness in this comment are down to the fact it is very hard to discuss something as general, amorphous, and so widely open to cultural difference as tattooing. I will be happy to continue to try and explain myself.

But what I’m saying, as it applies to this particular question, is don’t judge a book by its cover. Take a look at the tattoo and assess its meaning and/or significance for the tattooed. And take a good, hard look at the guy who bares the tattoo and do your best to figure out whether this guy is worth getting closer to. Ink on skin is no longer a sound basis on which to judge a person, and depending on his particular cultural or ethnic background, may well be a reason to respect him even more.

Tribal tattoos might be the most popular form of tattoos in the world right now. Originally referred to as any tattoo style done outside of the Western World, it has now come to be known as a style indicative of the tattoos created for thousands of years in the Pacific Islands and Africa.
Tribal tattoos are instantly recognizable with their dramatic use of aggressive dark lines in jagged symmetrical shapes spread throughout the skin. Tribal tats are most often done in simple black and skin tones but they can also be infused with color to brighten the overall look. Whereas other tattoo styles attempt to represent a specific object, tribal tattoos seem far more concerned with the ‘feel’ rather than what it specifically looks like.
For the cultures who created this powerful tattoo style, tattoos were not acquired because they looked cool. (Which they do.) They got them because of the power a tattoo could give them. The Samoans believe that an entire body suit of tattoos was the final step in becoming man— and any man who does not have this is considered an outcast. American Indians used body art to protect them while in battle. Even today, Burmese villagers believe that a tattoo over the heart can actually protect that area of the body from bullets. It is this special meaning that elevates the tribal tattoo from the simply decorative to the powerfully symbolic.
For years though, the western world’s only introduction to tribal tattoos were picture books drawn by scientists in the 18th and 19th centuries. These books detailed the tattoo work of cultures in the Marquesas islands and the Maori tribes of New Zealand and were often passed around in Europe like exotic pornography.
It wasn’t until LA tattoo artist Leo Zuleta borrowed a notebook from a friend of his depicting this tattoo style and began using it on LA rock bands in the 90’s. This fusion of trial tattoo with his own modern aesthetic, sometimes called neo-tribal or pseudo-tribal, and with its reliance on ancient spiritual symbolism became a worldwide phenomenon and one of the most sought after tattoos in the world.

I was just wiondering are tribal tattoo pieces still popular and cool to get the reason i ask is that i see a lot of people getting them persoanlly myself i hate tribal design pieces but i was just wondering why do people still get them of they are still not popular

Seems a bit catty to me. You admit you hate the style so other than to bash on them? You say people still get them but they are not popular? Why are you so worried about the art that other people choose to wear? You dont like it… Great! Dont get one. That simple. Theres no mystery to this people get art for all sorts of reasons but boils down to thats what they like. Its their body their money they can do as they please with it.

And to the clowns that think you must be of a certain heritage to get tribal tattoing. Tribal as its known in the west was popularized by Leo Zulueta. He was inspired by the traditional designs of the polynesian tribes but they are very far from ripping off someones sacred symbols. Its about a look its not about actually being associated with a tribe. Its about self expression. Its how a person sees themselves. People spend too much time hating on what other people do and just need to check themselves.

I really really want a Maori style tattoo but I’m not of that decent or origin is it wrong or offensive to hav?

Te Uhi a Mataora was recently established by practitioners to discuss issues facing the art form, such as the practice by non-maori, an issue which is increasingly of concern to maori.

I would wager a guess that a person of actual Maori descent may find it offensive. It also seems a little odd to get tattoos of this style if you are not of that particular heritage since moko are very closely.

It conveys a sense of flow and rhythm. As to a translatory meaning, it doesn’t really have any. It’s pleasing to the eye. If it does have any particular meaning in words, it has probably long since been lost. At one time it might have denoted a particular ancestral bloodline. But it might be impossible to find out whose. That’s why tribal tattoos are going out the door like a sinking ship right now, quickly becoming a tattoo that dates you to a fad that is burning out quickly. And mark my words, ‘quote’ tattoos are going to go out more quickly than that. Letters are not an art form at all. Tribals are. But quote tattoos came out of the prison system, and will return there to stay. Take care.
