Some people are ignorant about what makes a good tattoo. Some people just like the way butterflies and tribal art look. And you know what?
That’s okay. For a 20 year old sorority girl, a butterfly on her ankle is totally fine if that’s what she wants and she’s happy with it, because she’s going to grow up, become a nurse and show her tattoo on the beach to be cute or when she’s drunk as part of a fun story to tell. And that’s why she wanted it, so it’s serving its purpose well.
Tattoos don’t always have to have meaning. I have birds on my upper back for no other reason than I happen to like birds – the same reason that sorority girl got a butterfly. But they look pretty, and they make me happy. My brother has a stalk of wheat filling in space on his sleeve. Why? Because he likes bread, and he needed something to fill in that little empty space. Whatever. Tattoos can be fun, they don’t have hold some deep meaning for everyone.
As far as bad quality tattoos go – I have no explanation except that people dont’ want to shell out the money it takes to get a good tattoo from a good tattoo artist. They’re impatient and they want their work done NOW, which means walking into a shop they haven’t researched and going to whatever artist is free, whether they know something about his work or not.
